Transit FAQs

Common questions on NCTS, T1/T2, the CTC and transit guarantees

What is the difference between T1 and T2?
T1 covers non-Union goods (for example, goods imported from outside the EU that have not yet been cleared) moving under transit. T2 covers Union goods that leave the EU, cross a non-EU territory and return to the EU — protecting their customs status. We prepare both.
What is NCTS and why is Phase 5 important?
NCTS is the New Computerised Transit System used to lodge and manage transit declarations across the Common Transit area. Phase 5 is the upgraded version that requires richer data and stricter timings, with full electronic discharge. All UK transit declarations must now use NCTS Phase 5.
Do I need a transit guarantee?
Yes. Every transit movement must be covered by an approved guarantee to secure the duty and VAT at risk. You can use a Comprehensive Guarantee (CGU) for ongoing operations or an individual guarantee per movement. We can set either up with HMRC.
How long does it take to set up a Comprehensive Guarantee?
HMRC typically takes 8 to 12 weeks to approve a Comprehensive Guarantee, including financial security and compliance checks. For urgent movements we can arrange individual guarantees while the comprehensive application is in progress.
What is the Movement Reference Number (MRN)?
When NCTS accepts your declaration it assigns a unique MRN that identifies the movement throughout its lifecycle. The MRN is printed on the Transit Accompanying Document (TAD) — as a number and a barcode — and is scanned at every office of transit and destination.
What happens if a movement is not discharged on time?
If the office of destination does not close the movement within the time limit, NCTS opens an enquiry. If not resolved, the guarantee is charged and the principal (declarant) becomes liable for the duty and VAT. We monitor every movement and chase discharge before this happens.
Can I move goods from Türkiye to the UK under transit?
Yes. Türkiye is a contracting party to the Common Transit Convention. We routinely handle T1 movements between Türkiye, the EU and the UK, with full bilingual support in English and Turkish.
Do you only work with hauliers, or also with importers?
Both. We act as a customs broker for importers, freight forwarders, hauliers and end shippers. Whether you need a one-off T1 or a full transit programme, we tailor the service to your role in the supply chain.
